You Can’t Sell Dead Products

Started by sbspalding · 1 year ago

Modern creative professionals always want to know what the root cause of piracy is. The answers that most people give are that pirating products easier or cheaper than actually purchasing them. While these are reasons why some people decide to pirate, they aren’t the root cause of piracy itself.

If you want to know why a […]

  • This is an AWESOME post. I have been ranting for a long time that the music industry is morphing into something that survives on tangible products (t-shirts and what not) and live shows. Gone are the days that a band sells plastic disks with their music on it. It's too easy to duplicate, as you point out. To be a rock star these days, you have to be an entrepreneur to market your bands live shows and make money that way. The recipe for a successful musician in the future is 1 part Axel Rose, 1 part Steve Jobs.
  • So the record industry is dying. Deja vu so why the fuss? Cars replaced horses & mobiles are replacing landlines. All new tech creates funerals & births. Like you say, it comes to realising when what you're watching is a funeral.
  • I feel your frustration. Thanks for telling it like it is.

  • Where I live it has been many years since the fuel we out in our cars was only $5 a gallon.. I think it is approaching the $10 mark these days. I live in the country and have to travel more than 20 miles every day to get to work. If, like me, you are spending 1/4 of your income just in fuel to get to work you will porbably have more of an incentive.

In this country, the United Kingdom, a red dyed agricultral diesel is available illegialls for only a couple of dollars per gallon. Its as good as regular diesel but if you get caught using this tax free fuel on the roads you face a big fine but if you drive a lot of miles its worth doing.
  • I'm not sure I agree with the cornstarch gasoline analogy, but the point is well taken. People pirate products and ideas because the cost of doing otherwise is too steep for them to climb. There's a disincentive to being legal.

The piracy alternative to buying gasoline isn't cornstarch gasoline (which would be innovation) but hacking into the pipeline or siphoning gas from someone who rightfully purchased the product.

Thanks for getting my mind this early in the morning!
