Ugh! I find it disruptive for the same reasons you do, plus it is hard enough to keep track of your own networks' tweets, once you start amassing followers and vice versa. I see the counterpoint, but that just doesn't resonate for me.

Many people are becoming more immune to advertising in general and when the execution is something as "junky" as Magpie tweets, I'd have to wonder what sort of success they would have in getting exposure for the product. Maybe it has a higher click thru than I assume, but all I have seen on Twitter is people complaining and threatening to unfollow those who who subscribe.

Thanks for posting such a timely issue, nicely done.

I think you are right. When I first saw the amounts of money they were ready to dish out, I thought they may be doomed, because I don't really think they will get the click throughs needed to sustain that payout. but then again, it depends on the value you assign to a Twitter click through. And since the advertiser pays upfront for delivery and not click through, they are safe for now. But will the advertisers keep coming back?

Either way whether Magpie lives or dies, others will follow and most likely learn lessons and improve the response.

Twitter will loose me if it has Advertising tweets, or at the least I will use it less, and if you take that across the board with other users, then Twitter will have a problem. Twitter has dealt with spammers but now what if their own loyal users are spammers?

It will be interesting to see how they deal with this. :O)

I have been contemplating starting a Twitter account, but I have been putting it off because I have been so busy. Now things are starting to slow down and I want to start one, but these things sound like they would bother me as well. Should I start a Twitter account, or should I put it off?
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
Start a Twitter account. It has opens so many doors for me, and widen my network around the world. It's a great place to ask advice, bounce off ideas, see what is the latest...a really wonderful way to meet amazing people. The ads are just a very small part of it. and getting smaller. :O) ophelia
and add me if you join twitter. i am "ophelia" on twitter. ;O)

I didn't thought Twitter would be something for me.

But now I will try it.

It's an interesting experiment you should try, it's free. It only asks you for your time. :O) ophelia

I agree completely. Twitter is a great place to network and keep up to date with what others are doing. I am a little disappointed, however in how many ads I see on twitter. I don't want to see someone's blog post or their advertisement. It becomes really frustrating and I only want to disconnect from following them. Twitter is a smart idea, but it is really difficult to fix problems like this one.
  • Chad Gardner · 1 year ago
I am only following around 100 people right now and it is still a challenge to keep up as thoroughly as I would like. I don't think I have seen any MagPie ads from anyone I follow yet, but it seems like that is just more noise I would have to learn to filter.
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
I haven't seen any Magpie ads since the deluge last week. They are listening to the audience and trying not to loose what they have left. Now it will be interesting to see how Twitter creates revenue when they have seen the Magpie backlash.

    Thanks for visiting! :O) Ophelia

    Hello again...

I had a question of sorts.I ask, because I want to know if it is just the people who have found me on Twitter or if this applies to more of the masses?

Is it only certain groups on Twitter who do one or all of the following:
    1. They follow you, you follow back--they DM you with a generic blurb and have their blog or some other advertisement?

    2. They seem like a "human" when they follow you and after looking at some tweets you think, "okay, I 'll follow em' back" (I just am leery of spammers), but then you start to notice many tweets contain their products they are selling?

    3. Or all of a sudden they are talking about "giveaways" en masse?

    4. Or if you read someone's blog and tell them they start spamming you with signing up as a subscriber regularly?

    5. Is there a lot of multi level marketers on there, or is it my imagination?

This is DEFINITELY NOT all of the people I follow/followers, but it seems the ones who fall into those categories tweet the most. And if it is just me, oy! I need help in finding new twitterers :-)
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
    1. everyone on Twitter will promote their latest work, blog, etc.it's a given. and not too intrusive if its kept to a minimum.
    2. you can always unfollow someone if it gets annoying. most of the time i ignore it.
    3. it could be the holidays and some PR people get products to send out on Twitter.
    4. you can always add them to your "junk mail" list, or ask them politely to stop.
    5. there are quite a few multi level marketers, not your imagination :O)

hope this helps. the more you tweet the more you reach. most people are not on it all day/night and might miss the first tweet about a product, blog etc.
  • Tracy · 1 year ago
Thanks, for the comments, it does help.

I don't mind promotion of some sort when you have established rapport, it's the ones who do it in their first correspondence--just not the warm fuzzies or a conversation starter for me.

And, I have never in my life, in one place, seen so many people who are marketers.

BUT, I am not complaining all that much, cuz I 've met some interesting, funny and really nice people on Twitter .I also can find myself sucked into its vortex for hours some days.

oh yuck. If I get Magpie tweets I will be pressing the "unfollow" button
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
    HI barbara,
There haven't been any lately, but you know they are refining their "delivery" to be less intrusive, so maybe in a week or two we might be seeing a fresh batch.

We are more likely to "unfollow" someone on Twitter because we really don't have a personal connection other than the microblogs, which is why anyone using Magpie should be aware of, you will loose followers at a very fast pace.

thanks for visiting and commenting! :O) ophelia

after twitters recent aquisition attempt for $500m i wondered how would anyone recoup that - the platform seems difficult to monetize

I'm a Twitter user for quite sometime already and I love its social networking aspects, too. However, I don't like Twitter to have some ads. Just like what you've said, it's irritating and destructive. I'm already used to an ad-free Twitter.
  • Friend Adder Elite · 1 year ago
yeah magpie.. seems like spam for me now..
  • Fashion Shop · 12 months ago
If tweeting is an irritating media to me, i will simply drop the idea because ther are many alternative social networks which allow me to connect with my friends too.
  • Fireplaces Bucks County · 10 months ago
I agree with the counter point... these things do usually even out. If you can tolerate the annoyances in the beginning, in time they will fade away or become less obtrusive.

I've been tweeting for a while now, however the thing i find is that i'll tweet loads within a few minutes, then completely forget about it for a few days, then go back and tweet a load more... surely its better to tweet less but often rather than lots and rarely???
