I think there are two kinds of people. Those that read the 4 hour work week and think, "I need to find a muse, an indian assistant and a beach, stat!" and people like me that think "What if I *want* to work more than 4 hours a week?"

It seems to me like both types of people can find success, but the trick is that the second group enjoys the ride.

On a side note, this line is gold: "Being successful as an entrepreneur is almost exclusively the ability to overcome thousands of tiny problems before you run out of money."

If you find a job that pays well on 4 hours a week you will probably like it enough to work more.

I don't think anyone has issue with working long hours if they like their work.

Well said and amen! I've been thinking about this lately because I've been at it 2.5 years and making modest traction, loving the work, and haven't run out of money yet. :) Thanks for the reality check.
  • Glenn · 3 months ago
Very well said, it does require a hell of a lot of work and you are also right about the running out of money part. Even if you have a proper business that is actually selling something rather than nothing you still have to cut the chaff out of the way first and rise above it and everything else to get to where you want to be. I am still stuck in the chaff which I hope I will get out of soon. The difficulty is you have a product that you know you can sell if someone sees it but just getting people to see your product on the internet is a difficulty in itself. It's only mainly based around google and has to wait until the big Google decides if it is worthy or not.

A vast increase in productivity, care of staggeringly swift advances in computing technology, drove the U.S. economy to new heights in the last 20 years. Where might the next surge in productivity come from to propel us out of the economic rut we are in now.

I like your post a lot. Reminds me of time shared at Grooveshark (my time spent watching, yours spent helping overcome thousands of tiny problems before they ran out of money). and by the way, I think I saw you in a car as I was driving out of Oakbrook Walk! is this a possibility? how are you doing

Steve, doing business on the online world is much like the real world, as it not only need a lot of patience, dedication and determination, but you also have to prepare for the failing as well! Without failing, it won't take us further to the future...

The failiure is followed by the success. The only miracal of being success is hard working and good will power. As you said the poeple who have succeeded might have been engaged in their respective fileds for a long time wit hard luck. Nice post I really like this.

Pretty refreshing to read this; at age 50 (almost), I'm just starting to understand what I want to be when I grow up. No one I know has had more "learning experiences", yet, as you point out, when I finally make that elusive fortune, I'll be an "overnight success".

Ya, a 30-year overnight success! Good story Steve.

Good post and you are generally right... but with the fast paced world we live in with the internet you can gain overnight succes quicker... if that makes sense! Admittedly not literally "over night"

Finally an article that explains real work to make a business work. The Internet came and all of a sudden our brain turned to mush as we thought the gold mine was in the Internet with no digging, sweat, or work.

The Internet offers great resources and legitimate avenues for entrepreneurs, but to reach success takes work commitment and time.

It's really strange how quickly people forget things like that.

That's true, those are some very interesting stories. I Love reading about them as I'm sure most people do. Even inspire me on my entrepreneurial ventures. So when I got all excited to start my business you can imagine my disappointment to see that it's not that fast, or easy. Gotta keep on keepin on though right?
  • Guest · 2 months ago
Those stories are always inspiring to hear about. But it's true the frequency of those situations are very low. I say, let them inspire but realize it takes work, hard work to get a good business started. I should know. I got caught up in the glamor

I am living proof of this one. I have been working in the Internet for around 8 years, always hoping to find the next niche product or revenue stream that is going to make me tonnes of money overnight. It's taken me a long time to work out that making money on the Internet, like everywhere else, takes time!
  • Brochure Printing · 2 months ago
I totally agree with you. Success doesn't come 'overnight.' It will take a lot of failures and challenges before one can achieve it. That is, of course, should be done with the right attitude.

Thank you Steve, your blog's great and I agree with your opinion that people are good at it does not need a genius or a visionary, they are just extraordinarily good at finding solutions quickly and make more right decisions than wrong.

This is so true, no one ever hears about all the times you fail, only the one thing that succeeds in your repertoire of tricks. I haven't made it yet, but I now have the ability to know I will make it, not think or hope I will.

I think the secret to become a successful entrepreneur is hard work. You can never be successful if you don't put extra effort to your business.

Like the idea that being self employed means you can work as little as you like, when actually you have to work more because success or failure depends on you - and you don't get paid for vacations.

Thanks for the sober look at success. I have owned two successful businesses in the past and I was always amazed at the people who would comment to me, "I was going to do the same thing", (as what I was doing). I always felt like responding that you would be willing to put it all on the line financially, work 80 hour weeks and sleep like a baby - two hours at a time and wake up crying. No you wouldn't. I'm glad I did and had a blast doing it, but I much happier now that I don't. Thanks ;)
  • Vacation Rentals Lake Tahoe · 5 days ago
I have been in the Vacation Rental industry base in Lake Tahoe, Nevada and found that successful bookings increase in line with the attitude of the employee. For example if a renter calls and has a whole list of questions about a Lake View or Ocean Front vacation rental or cabin the booking can usually be made if the booking agent is nice, full of knowledge and patient. Helping our reservation team to stay focused and positive create a welcoming energy by others in the office and travelers seeking vacation rentals, homes and cabins. Just my 2 cents :)
