How To Split An Atom: The Fun Fair

  • casas rurales en Soria · 1 year ago
I stopped acumulating bookmarks on my computers until a couple of years ago when I discovered del.icio.us. I just make sense to keep all your bookmarks in the "cloud".
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
I should use my del.icio.us more often. I keep bookmarks in folders that are titled for certain jobs, clients, etc. I am still referencing my online to my offline habits of "folders".

Bookmarks are really helpful I use them all the time
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
I love my bookmarks. It's my digital post-it note. I am a collector of bookmarks, my problem is I have to be more discerning.

That says something for the old oil painting on my wall that I never get tired of looking at over and over again.

Wow, I have 35 folders, nested of course, in my link bar.I actually use most of them, or at least visit the sites anyway.

I do have two though that I fill up with stuff I think is interesting at the time and fully intend to come back too, but never do. I think your carnival analogy is pretty spot on.
  • wilhb81 · 1 year ago
Ophelia, by reading your article, ir really bring me back to the fun fair again...lol

Hmm..., I love to play whack the moles and that's why I always confused of what contents I should go for my blogs/websites...
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
I always feel nostalgic when I drive by one in a church or park. The sound of the well oiled machinery to the smell of popcorn. The "kurchunk" sound of the Whirly Gig rotating. Whack a Mole is fun, and that hammer they give you is always weighted wrong so that you have to swing it like Thor's Hammer.

Content comes from what inspires you. What excites you today? What made you mad? What made you think? You can walk around and see something that hits you. Some of the most wonderful literature came from the most innocuous items, an urn, a pond, or even a bus full of wanderers.

I don't really keep track to the amount I have.. sometimes it gets a little to cluttered.
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
    Dear Roger,
I stopped counting a while ago. Now when I go through those bookmark folders I can see a timeline of what I was working on. It's like a diary. I can see the flow of ideas and inspirations, and the ones I marked because I didn't want to go in their direction.

Thank you for visiting,:O)) We all should have a Bookmark Yard Sale, I will trade you 100 of mine for 100 of yours.

    :O)

  • Roger Hamilton · 1 year ago
Hmm.. didn't know that it's like a diary. Now that I think of it, it really shows.

You have a nice blog =)
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
    Dear Roger,
    Thank you so much. :O)

Bookmarks show where I was, like a popcorn trail. A diary. A stream of thought. Will they lead me back to where I began?

I have to look to see what my first BookMark was.

    Thanks again for commenting, :O)

I never counted but after your article decided check my bookmarks. So, the results are:
    1) Home computer 3 folders with app.100 bookmarks and app.20 extra bookmarks
    2) Office computer - 17 folders of the first level (I decided not to spend time for the inner folders), app.600 bookmarks
    3) Delicious - 77bookmarks, no folders
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
    Hi Fizber,

About the same here. Now wouldn't it be great if we could see them all visually like a book shelf? You could mouse over each "book" and see a short synopsis of the site and a screen capture. Links don't do much for me, they are just words and most sites have names that don't necessarily describe what they are.

Thanks for commenting and visiting! :O)
  • Fizber · 1 year ago
Yeah, your are right. I realized that I don't remember why I've added more than half of them...
  • Valerie · 1 year ago
Hi Ophelia, I have lots of bookmarks too. After reading your article, I decided to go through my bookmarks and found out that I have over a hundred bookmarks at my favorite social bookmarking sites and 86 bookmarks at my home computer.
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
    Dear Valerie,
Amazing how easy it is to accumulate all those bookmarks. With a stroke of two keys, BINGO, you have a bookmark. If they charged for bookmarks, I would have five, tops. And I wonder if i went back to my earliest bookmarks, would they still be active?

Thanks for visiting and commenting, it's appreciated, :O)

Using social bookmarking services and all that hoobla seems to just make the problem more diverse. Perhaps if there was a search engine just for my bookmarks so I can look thru them in kinda a dmoz environment.
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
That would be a great tool, to be able to do a search of your own bookmarks.
As much as we like to search outside, a way to search within is a great idea.

I'm using del.icio.us too. With multiple computers, I just don't know another way. Not only are my bookmarks also like a walk down memory lane, but I've probably never visited most of them since I bookmarked them. Just seemed like a good idea at the time!
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
I make a lot of bookmarks because I have made the mistake of not, and then having a heck of a time trying to remember how I found "that site". They accumulate leaves on a tree, except they never fall.

Thanks for visiting and commenting, it's appreciated.

The comparison between the various rides and the sites is really cool! Very creative. I've been into bookmarking only recently and already have got so many pages out there.
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
Do you remember your first carnival ride? All I remember is getting off with my head spinning and my stomach on the wrong side of my lungs. Now every time I see a Whirly Gig, I turn green.

Thank you so much for the kind and supportive words, it's really appreciated. :O) Ophelia

I have more than a 1000 sites bookmarked on delicious.
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
You Win! Now you get to choose a Stuffed Bear, or a Ping Pong paddle, or a fake watch! :O)

Wow, it's amazing that you have a 1,000 bookmarks. Which means there's a 1,000 sites out there vying for your attention, just in your folders. And how many more are out there waiting to be seen? Too many for my lifetime, I am just skimming the surface.

Thank you so much for visiting and commenting,

I tried and then stopped counting my bookmarks - way to many ;o)

After reading Casas Rurales comment, I have a new task to look forward to - to examine what and how del.icio.us. works.

There are so many tools that eventually can ease your dayly work - but which one do you pic and where do you start....
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
Ahh, where to start? Not easy when we have so many distractions. It takes a strong hand to complete a list that is started in the morning. :O)

Thank you Michael for commenting and visiting. :O) Let me know how it goes with del.icio.us (why do they make it soooo hard to type out some of these names?, it's like a new language)

    :O)

I have too many Bookmarks to count! Some of them i visit regularly like blogs/forums but many others are never visited more than once.
I like the analogy of the fun fair, it's very clever!
  • ophelia_chong · 1 year ago
    Hi PS3

The worst ride is the one that goes in circles. When you get off all you can do is wobble from side to side and drool onto your Metallica tshirt. Some sites are like that too. You start in one place and you keep ending up back at the same place, when you know you should be somewhere else completing the task you wanted to do.

Thanks so much for commenting. :O) And let me know which ride is your favorite. :O)

This post made me grin. I have about 100-200 bookmarks on different browsers and the moment I bookmark an item, I forget about it :P Firefox at least helps me recall my bookmarks but with the other browsers, it's simply a waste of time. I keep bookmarking stuff nonetheless! ;)

I bookmark stuff on the web too and have four accounts. I use Delicious, Mento and Social median mainly for the purpose. Recently, I exported all my bookmarks to Mister Wong with the hope that I would use it profusely but man, it's proven to be yet another waste of time! ;)

Thanks for the article! Loved it.
  • granthoggins · 11 months ago
lol yeah i have at least 100 bookmarks! :D

Great analogy, I for one have an immense list of bookmarks that needs a "spring cleaning"

Perhaps I'll get around to it this year lol

Carnivals play very major role in life and society.
  • Franz Wakeboarding Equipments · 7 months ago
I don't understand, first off it started as a bookmark then switched to carnivals I don't get it. But anyways I have about 2 folders of bookmarks, the rest are gone I forgot to back them up when I reformatted my laptop.
  • psychics · 1 month ago
carnivals are amazing even the modern ones with the zipper ride!
