I was thinking about this the other day, but I was thinking commercial flights, not personal. US airline companies are having financial problems and now the price of gas is probably about to do them in. They are currently nickle and diming customers to death to stay afloat. I wondered if there was any technology that could replace the current engines.

Could you fly a 747 with hydrogen/fuel cells? No Hindenburg jokes, please.

Would solar or hybrid engines have too much weight because of batteries?

    I know they're hopeful about commercial flights...but I just seem...doubtful.

It’s a nice innovation to design such planes at the time when we really need them. We are on the crust where the fuel is going to deplete very soon. In such case the innovation will be very helpful.

This is really cool. We are sure well on our way to using renewable resources for just about everything.

It's encouraging to see all the green innovations coming out these days. Even a plane that partially uses solar would be a big improvement. Given all that wing space for panels, being closer to the sun, and flying above the clouds, solar powered planes make perfect sense.
