How To Split An Atom: Solar Paneled Race Car With 1800 Mile Range

  • Total Solar Energy · 1 year ago
wow. it looks like some crazy UFO or something. I've just read that San Francisco are having a major push towards solar cars in the near future

I'm enjoying your blog. I just highlighted several of your solar energy posts at http://www.squidoo.com/solarpowerlens
    Best wishes, Jim

"this car can travel a staggering 1864 miles at nearly 75 miles per hour"

Surely if the vehicle is powered entirely by solar power the distance it can travel is limitless unless its governed by some other requirement.. I love the way solar technology is developing, I just wish it was cheaper... I guess the oil companies are getting more scared which is great...

This is very cool - now if they can just start making regular cars like that we'd all have it made.
  • Jack · 1 year ago
well, it's a nice car, but i think we need something a bit cheaper!

That will take up so much space. haha! Okay there's an eco friendly solution and here I am worrying about space. but seriously, that would take up a lot of street space and next thing we know we'd be cutting up more trees for bigger and wider roads.

But then again, I hope this project pulls through. With more compact versions!

the solar paneled cars were one of the coolest innovations pertaining to cars, and having such mileage in solar powered cars are simply great.

Baby it must be UFO !
Someone drive it must be ET!
    hahaha!

    cool car, very fun

That is awesome. Solar is so important now. You can easily run you house from solar power too.

Wow, looks like the Martians have landed and brought their own ground transport. One thing though. If the car is solar powered, then why is it limited in range to 1864 miles? As long as the sun shines it should be able to run forever, right? (at least theoretically or unless something breaks down)

Great another concept car for solar energy. Now we need to advance to the stage of mass production. Or more research.

I love all this solar power development. I'm sure in the coming years as they develop the cells storage and power output further, were going to get some real looking "useable" cars for everday use. Thanks for the pic and article.
  • Jim · 10 months ago
WOW, $700,000 just for the panels, its going to take a lot before this kinf of technology is availabel to the masses like me, all I want to do is to make my home 'green' I havent even started to imagine making my car green

Solar systems work when sunlight strikes a solar photovoltaic module and excites electrons trapped in the silicon solar cell. The electrons travel through wires on the back of the solar panel and into your house, to be used immediately or sent to your electric utility. Most places in the high plains have plenty of solar energy available to meet some, or all of your needs. Homes located in areas with ample sunlight, where electricity prices are high, or where access to the electric grid is difficult, unstable or unreliable, are all ideal locations to install solar systems.

Looking forward to see more solar paneled cars in the near future. I just hope that such cars will available to the public and affordable for the people to buy one.

They are still too expensive for the average Joe.
The industry must start developing new cheaper models.

I will not be happy until there is a car that is completely gas free----solar powered would be great.
  • mdea · 3 months ago
It’s the car of the future! Seriously though, why do they continue these races? Wasn’t their purpose to encourage the advancement of solar-powered vehicle technology? The cars still suck as much as they did 20 years ago.

Very cool. With respect to the new tires, I wonder how many miles they last between changes…? I’m told that the old Bridgestone Ecopia’s (which is what I suspect is meant by “high tech, low rolling resistance tires”) can be expected to last for 100-1000 miles (with a high variance due to differences in suspension design and alignment), with ~500 miles typical.

Solar power systems installed by a person in vicinity is likely to evoke interest in the entire neighborhood, and learning about the cost savings, many are likely to follow suit and use this detailed step-by-step to set up similar systems in their homes. Leading by example in this manner can save our environment and also our earth.
