Style in and out of the office relays who we are. Luckily I am not in the public eye most of the time, or else they will outlaw yoga pants and UGGs.

Also are we using less since most communication is electronic? I wonder if pen sales are down, or if the paper clip will one day be just a relic?

I am also an Engineer, so most of the writing I do in the real world
involves numbers and what-have-you, so for the last five years the only
reason I have needed a pen was for checks.

Anytime I have to write one it's always an adventure trying to find where I
    lost it.

which brings to mind my bad handwriting. when I was in high school I was a draftsman, and had impeccable hand writing. Now it looks like a chicken on caffeine with a stick dipped in goo.

I work from home and to be honest, Staples and Office Max are like candy stores for me. I'm always looking for the latest and greatest "stuff" I can put into my office. Funny thing is... I never have clients stop by and the only one who sees my office is my wife.... but at least if I impress her.... ;)

I am reminded of the rather slow guy in the movie Office Space and his red stapler :)

I'm not surprised that workers are willing to pay money out of pocket to personalize their space. In this economy, businesses are cutting back on spending so employee's can get as liberal with office funding any more. I spent some money myself to help personalize my own office space.

This is sooo true and manufacturers of office supplies certainly know it. They now offer more ranges of designer style pads and pens etc that they do the cheaper more economy style stationery lines. You can turn it around and say the same thing when a company uses cheap, tacky looking office products, its obvious they go for the cheapest stationery possible but how bad does this look when they are entertaining their own customers and they are giving them a Biro that doesn't even work!! I would say if you are in sales for a company its definitely worth spending that little bit extra so that you come across as well presented to your client.

While I agree with some of the data above, I also question some of it as well.

For example, your data about people spending their own money on office supplies. Perhaps I've always worked at offices with a somewhat different culture as no one in any of my prior workplaces would ever purchase office supplies out of their own pocket. I could see this mentality if you were out in the public eye or if you were meeting clients, but for the average office employee; I find that hard to believe.

    Great statistical info thought.
