Jason Calacanis, I Salute You

Started by sbspalding · 1 year ago

I spoke about this briefly over at History of Blogging, but I wanted to mention it here as well. Despite disagreeing with the man on a few details, the one thing about Jason Calacanis (Weblogs Inc, Netscape, Mahalo) that I can’t help but respect is his deep understanding of the industry that he operates within.

  • Or, as Sun Tsu sums it up:
"Appear to be near when you are actually far. Appear to be far when you are actually near."
  • That sounds about right.
  • I have this love/hate thing with Calacanis. He seems so arrogant but at the same time what he says is alway intriguing. I love the 1st point on his list, buy MACs.
  • Wooden Spoon Approach - Stir it all up & sit back & watch while everyone gets excited around you. Because on the web, most publicity really is good publicity.
Not sure how buying lunches & some other perks would get past the taxation people tho'.
  • Totally agree with Calacanis
  • Well its great that you respect someone like Jason Calacanis, not everyone does.
  • Jason's intentions are great - a spam free search engine - but the practicality of a human edited search engine is something that remains to be proven.
  • "it’s classic Calacanis." I totally agree, not that I agree with his views, but it is class Calacanis
  • I read the History of blogging article, and it was really neat.
  • Not sure how much I like Clacanis, he seems good to read with all his posts and all but has an off attitude. Seems like he has a great idea here and it'll work, I really do like unique sites - Hope to see how it comes out. It could do well or be a failure.
  • I read Jason Calacanis' post about starting up, and found it slightly ridiculous. While some of the tips were decent, others will add additional costs. For example, "Buy macs" is outrageous as a lot of programs won't work on it, and they have a higher initial cost. His other tips are pretty valid though, such as the ones to increase the amount of the work produced by your workers though.
  • Quite frankly I think Jeff hit it right on the head. Some of his tips are helpful, his other tips are just foolish nonsense though. Firing people that aren't "workaholics" is absurd. If they do their job to a certain standard, there is no reason they should be fired. However, the idea about buying their employees a computer if they are willing to work an extra hour at home is a really good idea.
  • This is true. The best link biating and marketing are always well disguised wether it is via email, pr or whatever other medium.

Oh and yes Al Pacino was better but Jack Lemmons character had the most depth.
  • Coffee is for closers. Actually Macs are for closers. A bonus system motivates people more than the fear of being fired.
