How To Split An Atom: In Japan You Can Take Classes From Your Cell Phone

Dang, that is amazing, when I was going to school all we had was "Online Classes" at best, and all those were is textbook pasted onto web page and we still had to come in for tests..

When I was going to school, we had to read books. That's good. I still believe in books.

Awesome idea, really. You are absolutely right about Japan leading innovation in the mobile field and here is another proof. The only thing I personally think needs to be added is not a social network but something in terms of actual discussion - some conference calls maybe for the lecturer and students to discuss the subject. Anyway thanks for the great post.

That makes a lot of sense actually. Sometimes I get so wrapped up in the web that I forget there might be a simpler solution out there. Conference calls would be a great addition for real contact.

That's a little much don't you think. Students are barely using their cell phones to do more simple things like exchange with each other books (check out pazap.com), this is just waay out there...

Some universities offer webcasts of their courses, which comes handy when you're sick, but cellphone screens are too small for that I guess...

The problem with lectures and almost all teaching is it tends to be 100% verbal the student then writes it down but the transition between hearing and writing is so small nothings taken in and it happens constantly and the teacher might as well just photo copy everything. For teaching to advance firther there needs to be visual, audio and more in depth talking to teach, my teacher has a great technique where he used visuals like microsoft presentation with kep points tlaks about them then gives you website links for more information. Thats where all teahcing needs to go.

(i run a student website get pms over techniques to take more in when teacher just talk and you carnt help them, just write it down and read over not the most fun thing nore engaging)

    "The Future Of Education

While it seems pretty clear that this is a great way to disseminate information to learners on the go, is it a good way to learn? I think it depends on the class. For a traditional lecture where a student listens, takes notes and then studies these notes for a test, allowing easy access to the lecture anywhere can be a life saver. However, for some courses, especially on smaller, less abstract subjects you need to have a way to directly interact with the lecturer."

I don't see why cell phones couldn't be quite effective for learning, particularly with some of the new larger screens and the EV-DO phones. Nice post btw, I'll grab your feed. Have a good one.

that's definitely handy when you're late on the train and don't want to miss the courses...

I think the technical possibilities are amazing, especially in terms of cell phones!!! I just think the online lectures should be something additional. It makes definitely a big difference if you interact with someone who is there in person, or with someone on the phone. I am of the opinion that other people listening to a lecture or taking a class, are a motivating factor. If you just study at home listening to virtual lectures, you are alone all the time... I would definitely prefer a real lecture with real people, but it would be nice to have the opportunity to re-listen to the lecture at home!

I would find it quite annoying trying to watch the lecture on my cell phone. The screen is way too small plus the volume on the cell phone is not that clear. Currently most university offer live streams over the net to laptops. I would prefer that over trying to see what is happening on that small screen

What I basically think is that, It cant by any means compensate the classes which we get from real class rooms, because they teach something more than education. Sorry to differ from you.

I think that classes should still be taken real classrooms.
You cant learn properly using only a cellhpone. At least not yet

Nice idea but but it is based on students enthusiasm to learn

This is a really cool idea. Japan is really good when it comes to advanced technologies. But personally though, I still prefer to study in a real classroom than study via cellphone.

Japan is always so far in technology and I think they are on to something. Teens love their cell phones and use them all the time, so why not use it for a learning tool. I think it is a great idea.
