    Turn Idle FireFox into ScreenSaver!

Or use your FireFox as digial photo album!

    It's also very memory efficient.
  • Thanks for the compliments, any other plugins that you would recommend?
  • Adblock Plus or any other adware extensions should be included.

    If it blocks advertising banners, applets, scripts, etc then it indirectly takes you less time to load a page. Of course, the main perk is that you don't have to be bothered about ads ^^ especially those newer ads that make sounds/noises -.-;
  • Good point mate, Adblock Plus is a lifesaver. It certainly would fit into the "productivity" section.
  • So, if you don't use Flickr or GMail, this can be summarized as "install FasterFox."
  • I'm always on the prowl for anything new related to add-ons/re-configuring firefox to the max and
thought I was on the cutting edge of the latest infomation on the subject. You've remphatically demonstrated there's a lot of information I wasn't aware of with some excellent heretofore unknown tips, tricks and strategies that have made a difference in my browser performance and productivity.

The manner in which you specified 16834 for the browser.cache.memory.capacity demonstrated to me the sort of consummate professional you seem to be in the perfectionism you strive for with your
insistence on the precise integer value to submit.

I've seen I don't know how many configuration parameters all of which gave figures rounded off to 15000. That says a lot about you.
  • @Chris there are quite a few more plugins that are mentioned, but I do like the Flickr and "Gmail" ones quite a bit.

@Marc Thanks mate, most of the times when dealing with something like that to get the absolute best performance you want to get as close to the base two value as possible. Thus, there is speed in precision.
  • Well there's also the favorite of fasterfox which does the same thing as the network pipe lining.
  • Great set of tips -- just one problem. The Gmail "Conversation preview" script didn't work for me. Nothing happened when I right-clicked, other than the message appeared as "read" instead of "unread."
  • How about Sxipper?

    www.sxipper.com

An openID based plugin that encrypts the firefox password cache. Check it out!

    http://sxipper.com/
  • Great suggestions folks!
  • Re: browser.cache.memory.capacity

Just want to point out that if you have less then 768MB of RAM, then setting b.c.m.capacity to 16384 will actually make things worse as you are using a number higher then the default.

  • Awesome article with some great advice on speeding up Firefox. Cheers! :)

    Steve
  • Good point Ben, thanks Fable!
  • you cover it all dude. congrats.
  • Excellent

As a big Firefox fan, I am always on the look-out to convert others into this wonderful browser.
  • good :D
liked the part on greasemonkey scripts
  • love the tweaks. worked great.....................
  • Enabled pipelining and changed browser cache capacity to 16384. The speed increase is definitely noticable (FF 2.0.0.6). Thanks.
  • Thanks for all of the tips! But what should someone do with the BCM Capacity with a measly 256MB RAM? When I press CTRL+Alt+Del My firefox shows to be taking up like 80000+ and I change that but it makes no difference? I'm inexperienced and confused there. :p
  • Like the tips. Enjoyable. I wish more people would make the change and customize Firefox to they way they work. Make the browser work for you. Keep up he good work
  • Thanks for the tips! You F*#king ROCK!!! \m/
  • just one question.. how do I add adblock to my addons?
  • Click on this link.
  • Firefox is great. But it uses too much of my broadband bandwidth by pre-fetching pages. Luckily I found a way to stop firefox from pre-fetching webpages. Check here
  • THE BAD THING ABOUT FIREFOX, THEY'LL ADVERTISE A DOWNLOAD FOR 3.0. BUT WHEN YOU START TO DOWNLOAD, FIREFOX WILL ONLY SHOW A 2.O DOWNLOAD AND I HAVE 3 OF THEM. I WANT A 3.0 FIREFOX DOWNLOAD SO I CAN CLICK ON ANY LINK AND NOT HAVE TO WAIT 2 MINUTES OR THERE ABOUTS.--ITS CALLED FALSE ADVERTISING FOR ITS CUSTOMERS.
  • When I go to the "Greasemonkey" section and click on the two "here" links, it shows up as a url not found.
  • Fixed :)
  • Thanks for the tips.

    But you missed PermaTabs,

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/...

This is my #1 productivity saver. It makes tabs for designated sites permanent. Handy for webapps like gmail that you need constant access to.
  • Nice tips, but i think I stay with my favourite Opera Browser ;)
  • i have favorites on explorer that did not move over to fire fox when i downloaded it, how do i get them there ?

Really makes for interesting reading, but more than that makes Firefox productive like never before. Thanks for sharing. Much appreciated. Going to try them out especially greasemonkey extension.

  • Firefox 3 definitely has earned its place on my desktop. I use a couple of the extensions you mention, and, I can't imagine doing without them.

The configuration changes you mention are completely new to me. I'm thinking that the memory and pipelineing tweaks will quiet the only knocks I have about the browser.

  • Great article. A lot of excellent plugins you mentioned. Theres no reason to use IE over Firefox these days.
  • Oh, wow! This is really an awesome post! I didn't even know by enabling the pipeline will make my Firefox become even faster than before!

  • I love FoxyTunes especially when you assign shortkey for it (such as A for stop, S for play, D for pause). It is so helpful when you learning listening and reading text script.
  • thanks a bunch :)
