I wrote about this a bit ago as well. I named it the "Virtual Schrodinger" law.

    Virtual Schrödinger's Law

It works better for two reasons.

    1. the site is delivered to you, you don't have to go find it in a list
    2. There are no power users of note in stumble upon. You don't have to kiss ass to the power users of digg to get your story traction.

    Hey nice idea Steve.
if you get a few stumbles that is enough to get decent traffic, it wont crash your server like digg but it is worth, as you already mentioned you will receive traffic from interested folks.

I've definitely gotten some traffic boosts from SU, just as from Digg. However, the quality of hits isn't exactly something to be proud of. On an e-commerce site, the odds of converting them to sales is akin to buying a lotto ticket. I'm sure with other broad appealing sites it could be a much different story however.
  • Steve · 2 years ago
Traffic and conversions are entirely different questions. For a blogger traffic == exposure and ad revenue. For e-commerce you have to throw in percent conversion because traffic without conversions is just server load. Your site has been stumbled by the way.

Hi, I knocked up a website about a month ago, just as a little hobby really, but it's been interesting to watch and experiment with the Stumble-upon system. I was surprised to see last week visitors to my site go from 20-50 a day to 450 in one day, of course that number has been steadily reclining. But even still this was all generated from people hitting the thumbs up.
I'm aware I still have a lot of work to do, ie increase content and improve the lay out of the site slightly, but like anyone else out there with a website will know, it's satisfying to think that you've started from scratch and created something people find interesting, or in my case amusing.

So now here's my offer to all of you, i'll scratch your back if you scratch mine...
