Your Competition Doesn’t Exist
It seems that people in America are willing to leave other people to their own devices when it comes to things like sexual peccadilloes, choice of college majors (no matter how unrealistic), and other lifestyle choices, except when it comes to dieting. I have been harassed in the office break room many a time for being on the Atkins diet, and these comments inevitably come from people who are having a peanut butter sandwich on white bread, a snickers bar, and a diet coke for their lunch. Not to peg them as hypocrites; I'm simply highlighting their knowledge of nutrition.
The belief among most people who are not informed about this style of eating is that following Atkins means cutting out carbs COMPLETELY. This is simply not true in any way whatsoever. In reality, the Atkins diet is focused on restricting the amount of carbs you eat, and restricting the carbs you do eat to those green vegetables which are packed with the most vitamins and nutrients possible. Thus, if one is to accurately follow the Atkins diet, one actually does "consume (carbohydrates) in moderation." I eat more vegetables on Atkins than I did before I began, when I was eating a pretty "regular" American diet.
I bring this up because I am very tired of this myth being spread around.
Keep up the good work!
Barrie, From the Atkins Side of the Fence
Carbohydrate’s are what will keep you going in the long term. Unlike Sugar, it usually takes your body between two and four hours to process Carbs into glucose, which means that this is a long term energy solution. The nice thing about Carbs it that you can avoid the spike and crash that sugar often produces. No matter what your buddies over on the Atkins side of the fence tell you, Carbs are your friends — as long as you consume them in moderation./
While I do agree with many of the things said, I have to say that not differentiating between refined and unrefined carbs is sloppy.
White refined flour, while being a source of carbs, will not provide you with long time energy, it is essentially as bad as refined sugar. Now, if we are talking about 'keep going long term' energy, natural unrefined carbs as in whole wheat, fruit and vegetables is what you want.
@3 Also correct, carbs provide long term energy while refined sugars are only short term. The article is primarily geared towards short term energy boosts rather than long term dietary decisions.
If either if you want to do a write up how food can improve productivity, please send it my way. I would love to explore this topic more completely.
My idea of health is if i can still gulp down a coke and a burger at 95 if i m alive :) ). How long one can be on a specific diet. One can never maintain his will to be on a hard to taste diet.
If moderation is observed, a daily average meal with proper vegetables well supplies all the human needs to be beyond diseased condition.
Nutrition is a part of health maintenance, not all. Being and staying healthy is a different game. Three systems- digestive system, nervous force of the whole body and mental attitude - define health. Discount any one of the three, i bet you are in danger. Health diet merely solves a part of "digestive system health".
I think i m being too much. But a health crazy i m, difficult to stop any flow of thought. Sorry for behaving like a health teacher :)
