Yeah...it is getting a bit silly. I recently closed some accounts because I just was not using them. Like you said, there are only so many hours in a day, and most of us have work to do!

I think the whole social media thing has to be reduced in size and I think over time it will be.

There will emerge a top contenter in due course, but for the meantime we'll have to put up with multipul accounts and things coming from everywhere.

Look at Facebook. If you go "out into the field" you'll find that a lot of people are suffering from Facebook fatigue. They don't use it out of any sense of joy anymore. It's only relevant because too many of their messages still flow through it.

I always wonder whether Social Networkings relevance is limited only to those who need the web for their bread and beans.

Thanks cdw. To me the statement in the related post 'Social Media Made Easy' sums it up - 'Can become overwhelming as everyone creates everything'.
Interesting that the post which seems to have brought by far the most response was that on old fashioned email, because everyone needs it. The socnetworking may just become too much work & bother. The Next Big Thing may be that users have gone off social networking. Ow !

That's the real question. When the novelty wears off and we all start looking at the web like any other business -- what will we find?

I have to agree totally with Maggy. I am starting to really question just how useful social media is. Yeah, I know it can help you at your chosen endeavor, but at what cost of time and energy? Is it truly worth the effort spent?

I don't text and I am happy to say so. I work from home so when I leave I'm leaving the office and I don't want to be bothered. I seldom carry a phone for the same reason. I am on the internet 12 hours... So I am already way to connected.

'Twitter is dead.' All these competitors leaping up to seize the space make me think of vultures hovering over a dying creature. Which makes me think that the economics of web 2.0 are as brutal as any other that have gone before. What you're recounting is another version of 'Dog eat Dog'. Which is a shame because Twitter was a great innovation, even name, but they should have seem this coming in time to repair things.
And I agree that most users are suffering from an overload of information & conversations. Question - how useful is most of it & when it becomes less of a novelty, are users going to tire of it ?

Nice post, and i agree its next to impossible to keep up on all these networks. As one of the guys at kwippy(http://kwippy.com), we look at twitter's current state as an opportunity to grow .... although we are not aiming at conversations, our threaded nature makes us a fit in the same market as well.

I still believe that unless twitter completely works out its stability issues, there is room for a potential replacement.

Absolutely. I setup accounts to test Jaiku, Pownce, and Plurk but the community is a duplicate of my already established community at Friendfeed and Twiiter. I'm not a huge user of Twitter but I really don't see the need for multiple "status services" and FF really serves me well. My goal is obtaining a good signal to noise ration and duplicate signals just become noise. I'll just pick 1 or 2 and stick with it.
