Start with plastic bags! We all use them over and over. It is not a waste. Why make them so thin it takes 2 or 3 to keep your stuff in them? Why not go back to Sam and his ideas? I just checked out that LOGOBIDS site. It really seems to undermine and take advantage of artists. They are making an attempt to undercut and devalue the work of artists by making a cheap contest out of graphic designer's work. I was so surprised to see that people are trying to get design work for $100 or less under the premise of a contest (So people are doing free work and only one person gets paid in the end and very poorly at that) Also the concept and value of designers gets so screwed up with this cheapening of design work, that talentless people with a new program are calling themselves designers and devaluing the work of others. Great designers have to settle for pennies just to compete because of yet another site that doesn't get it.

While a logo is something that everyone sees, I do not think that it is of much importance. A good logo is only helpful in the case of a new start-up business without much publicity. But Wal-Mart is a multi-billion dollar corporation, and it already has a great name for it. I really think that people could care less about its logo--only its good prices.

Walmart should of sanctioned this contest. It would of been fun and brought a lot of positive press (they need it). The winner gets $100 and a million dollars worth of free press.

That's an interesting analysis. The new logo definitely does not look like the brand of an overlord. Unless those overlords were teletubbies ;)

I think a lot of the effort with this logo is to make it seem less like a massive corporation and more like a friendly group of people.

The all-capital letters implies some kind of dominance, like our shadowy overlords watching over and controlling us. Using lower-case letters implies a more friendly atmosphere. The font is now nice and friendly rather than big and powerful, and the light blue helps that out. I think the point of this is that it might help improve the public's opinion of Wal mart as some power-hungry corporation.

But I do agree with you, it does seem overly simple, and not too much that'll really stick. The star is such a basic shape that it will take a LOT of branding to tie that to Wal Mart.

In this case I would take a hybrid approach (uh oh... sounds familiar...) Run the contest, but have two levels of feedback. Internal and external with the final decision going to the internal team. It would be wise for the internal team to have open dialog and constructive feedback for the external team.

I hadn't seen their new logo before and just checked it out. IMHO they definitely took a big step back with that one. I think they would be well suited to consider changing it and something like this contest could be a good way to do it, from a PR standpoint that is.
