Started by sbspalding · 7 months ago

Some days I go into book stores without any intention of buying a book.
Why? I won’t lie to you, it’s the coffee.
For someone who spends their days breathing bits and bytes, there is nothing more relaxing to me than sitting on a comfortable couch with a delicio ... Continue reading »

  • This can also apply to people. If you narrow down what you really do well, and add another skill that enhances it, you are more desirable as a hire.

I have always been fascinated by artists that paint, write music, make films, write novels; they take that core of artistry and apply it to other forms of expression.

Wonderful article Steve. :O) and I drink highly caffeinated drinks. I tried quitting coffee, but ended up with massive headaches. I am a wimp.

  • hadn't really thought of it like that - focus on your key strengths
  • In this point, I must agree with you here, Steve. I'm a regular Border's customer, and most of the time I go there for the irresistible coffee!
  • We too have a Borders and love the coffee. The intellect that engulfs the bookstore is a pleasant one. I will check into this book that you seem to take a liking to.
  • That's so true every time i go to a bookstore I almost always come out with a cup of coffee and maybe a book 1 in ever 3 or 4 trips, pretty neat I never really thought about it in that way before. It basically the equivalency of link bait the internet marketing world.
  • Interesting idea - I will give it some thought. So if the main reason why customers come to my site is for a professional bio, what else might they be looking for? Most people needing a bio want it for a website or for a speaking engagement, so I could start brainstorming from there. For example, what else do speakers buy online? Hmmm...
  • When the e-books really hits the market, the bookshop may be the the cafés.
  • Actually, it goes even further than what you suggest...

Borders is actually a coffee shop disguised as a bookstore. Borders sells books a primary business but from what I've been told by people who work at Borders is that the coffee, biscotti, and muffins are actually what pay the rent.

From what I've heard, Borders encourages freeloaders coming in because their business model is more like a library that sells coffee than a bookstore.
  • I’m writing from Turkey. Your site is so nice. Esperially it is nice as visual.
  • To be honest, I like bookstores for the same reason I like libraries - they're quiet places generally removed from the mindless noise and drivel of society at large, though with libraries being sans-coffee shops they don't quite carry that enlightenment vibe that a bookstore shares with coffee shops frequented by various intellectuals through the years.

In terms of secondary draw, hell, I'm still trying to find my primary draw in many ways.
  • Nice thought. Being focused in one particular service might eventually lead your users to another too. Thanks for this insight.
  • a book store is most of the time a nice place for me. and when it's borders its incredible. i love to go to border. specially for its coffee and calm&quite environment. i love every book stor more or less but borders is something special.
  • The combination of bookstore and coffee shop is a perfect match. The aroma of the coffee does stimulate the urge to read.
  • I always love to have a cup of coffee sitting in a calm and quite place , when its starbucks coffee then it rocks. i also love to scan through some books when i have coffee and i can't find a better place for all these together other than Borders.
  • Hi...Your post really got me thinking man..... an intelligent piece ,I must say.
