Ariel, Twitter And Who Is Holding Our Hands

Last week a brouhaha erupted over Twitter and their Terms of Service. The long version of the story was explained extremely well by Greg earlier this week, so I’ll skip to the juicy bits.

  • I'd say a last resort of banning should be in place for those you defined as using their accounts primarily for abuse, ie. the nutheads whose main or only intention is to be a wrecker - becaus you're always going to get some of those somewhere at some time. For the rest, users should be allowed to protect themselves with blocking tools. Arguments & disagreements are one thing, but users don't want to find some idiot has made them a target & gets satisfaction from hurling unreasonable abuse at them, continuously upsetting them from a distance, & there is nothing that can be done about it. Web stalking should be recognised as being a real offence as it belatedly has been in real life.
  • My final question is what do you think the place is for a owners of a communication platform? Should they define and dictate the discussions that are allowed to go on over their channel, or should they empower users to do it themselves?
