40 Sites You Might Actually Use

Started by sbspalding · 1 year ago

There are plenty of lists out there that do a good job of telling you the best applications for whatever occasion you could come up with. I decided to avoiding you what is “best” and instead put together a list of sites that I actually use. You can probably find better alternatives for most of [...]

These icons link to social ... Continue reading »

  • Stumble upon is a great source for search as well. It seems to me that it actually outperforms Googles and others when you use its search feature for a topic.
  • Steve, this is a great list. I've used a lot of these tools but also found a few new ones, particularly in multimedia which is a weak area for me. It's always great to get advice from the tech savvy and find out what others are using. Thanks for pulling it together!
  • One web application you should have looked at in terms of just having fun or customizing how you blog with video is Overlay.TV - I guess most people just want it to play, but I think more and more it would be good to engage folks in the video
  • All right, I guess I really need to look harder at FriendFeed...I'm always so reluctant to jump on these trends because it feels like overloaded social networking.

    Oh yeah....article stumbled....:)
  • Great list... kayak.com is great and one other site useful in saving me $$... http://www.searchalldeals.com
  • I suggest you take a look at Vitalist for the productivity section of your list. It is similar to RTM but tends to be easier for GTD.
  • Great list except for Kayak ... Mobissimo slaps on Kayak
  • I love flickr, it has been the one consistent site that has connected me to other artists and publishers. I recommend it to all my visual arts friends as a tool for promotion and visibility.
  • You do realize that Disqus is AWEFUL for SEO, right?
  • What, no PopUrls?
  • PopUrls.com blows Alltop.com out of the water.
  • Good call, popurl is actually a great addition. Thanks!
  • Alltop is just a terrible popurls rip-off, a concept completely overdone.
  • Gud Compilation..actually most of the mentioned services are also in my use...we have same interests/likes. :)
  • Personally couldn't survive without Netvibes.
  • ok...just tried out GrooveShark...
    dude....much appreciated...thanks for the
    recommendation ....its excellent...
hadn't tried it out before, and i'm very impressed...
    Cheers and thanks
  • My first Disqus comment :-)

Thanks for this... Wondering about StumbleUpon vs. Digg, though -- how exactly do you find Digg frustrating? Is it the submission process?

I myself can't handle the fugly StumbleUpon toolbar, and the links I submit without it only capture the page URL, not the page title...
  • Stumble Upon is just so much more transparent and customizable to me. I don't have to wade through all of the "same old stuff" that I often see on Digg's front page.

The tool bar is a pain, but I like the service enough to deal with it.

Thanks so much for making your first comment on HTSAA!
  • What about sync and/or backup services? I'm liking Mozy for backup but wishing there was some better file syncing solutions.
  • great list.
  • Good list. Quite comprehensive and useful too. Found that I have used quite a few of them myself.
  • StumbleUpon is my favourite (my username is Allnew) plus I'd add BBC news and the Drudge Report.
  • What about last.fm? I'm addicted to that site...if there is a better once that I am missing, I'd love to know about it!
  • A nice compilation. You have covered every aspect of online browsing and site surfing. However I will put Digg and Del.icio.us at top in News and Bookmarking category. Rest all are almost same as per my judgement.
  • I live on bloglines - but perhaps I will give google reader a try.
  • You should at least give it a look, especially if you like iGoogle
  • I'd heard of Remember the Milk. Will check it out based on your recommendation. Thanks!
  • cool beans
  • Remember the milk sounds like exactly something I need. Can it be set so that my wife can update the list?
  • As long as you give her a login to your account, you should be able to share
    the same todo list.
  • You don't have to do that... have her create her own account and you can share lists. My husband and I do that all the time. You can also add stuff to each other's lists by using the email trick (RTM gives you a private email address to add stuff to your lists... share that with your S.O. and they can add stuff directly).
  • Good point. I forgot completely about list sharing. Yet another reason to
    try out RTM.
  • As someone who stumbled upon this site I would recommend stumble upon to anyone. Also, there is a new company releasing a product called slingpage its also very solid!
  • Mint is my favourite
  • Good info, I just started using Kayak for my travel ;)
  • Hey, I've also stumbled onto one great site for travel. www.trax.com , and they have a widget we can use for our blogs as well. I hope it makes it to the list :)
  • how could an invite only beta with a hideous website rank higher than del.icio.us? i call bs
  • I was thinking the same thing. I read the article and thing it seems cool but realize that it's invite only ... Am I missing something ?
  • I love Delicious, but recently I've been using Twine a lot more, so I mentioned it. As I said, Delicious is great, but I wish it had a few more community features.
  • what.
having community is what ruins places like digg. who submits what article, arguments over who submitted first, comment flaming, comment spam, all that shit. delicious is delicious. it's just bookmarks. bang. simple as that.
  • Good point. Delicious is great if I am looking for cool stuff to look at and
it is deliciously simple. Places like Twine work when I am looking for
    recommendations.

I completely agree on the Digg thing. Their community is borked because of
things like comment spam. So far, the Twine community has been pretty
intelligent and helpful. We can only see how well it grows.
  • I was thinking recently that it shouldn't be too hard to create a del.icio.us killer using Google's AppEngine and OpenSocial. Any Python hackers want to give it a go?
  • I'd love to see someone try.
  • 'if it aint broke dont fix it' would be the right response here.
  • that was only 20, wtf man? BOGUS!
  • With the runners up it's 40.
  • lame
  • Any sites to suggest or just talking about the overall lameness of the list? :)

Either way, thanks for the time.
