How To Split An Atom: 3 Out Of Every 4 Businesses Die Of Neglect

  • Robert Dempsey · 2 months ago
Passion is what will get you through and keep you going. But make no mistake, as you said, having your own business is a hell of a lot of time. I can attest to that. One suggestion I can make it to have someone else working with you that can keep you on track. Many times I've come up with new app ideas and Justin and/or my wife have told me to keep focus on what we've got. That has been a huge help, and channeled my passion for what it is we're doing and what we're trying to achieve. No need to work all those long hours by yourself is there?

I definitely agree. Trying to "go it alone" is a quick way to go completely crazy. You need someone (preferably outside of your crazy bubble) to keep you on track and give you perspective. Great point per usual Robert.

Yum, this is totally spot on. I agree that it takes someone from outside your bubble to keep you focused on the must-dos. Great perspective, definitely a good idea to be reminded of this on a regular basis!

It's incredibly easy to get caught up in your own little bubble, especially when you spend as much time blowing it as entrepreneurs do. Getting some outside advice is almost ways what ends up making the difference.

completely disagree. if you believe in your product and have a passion for what you do, nothing can stop you. sounds hokey but it's true. of course you need to have some common business sense, but if you don't have that you probably aren't thinking of opening your own business anyways.

There are more people than even I'd like to admit who open businesses (especially online businesses with small startup costs) without any real consideration of what they're in for.

They are passionate but they are passionately heading in completely incorrect directions. I mostly agree with you though, passion is critical but if your ship is pointed towards the rocks, it doesn't really matter how quickly you row.

That being said, I've seen passionate people do some amazing things so my heart is definitely with you on that one.

Yes you are true that negligence makes most of the business a failure. There should be some one to guide us in a true way. Also we must be sincere at our work.

You are right about negligence in business. Without passion and hardwork, business will fail

I think that the information presented should be useful to many people a lot.

Boy howdy. I totally get the 'stitching the parachute on the way down'- whew! That's exactly what it feels like out here!

It is amazing how many "gurus" try to get people to build businesses only around where the dollars are (hey, anyone will pay for a new weight loss solution, right?)- when passion is the thing that gets you to build anything- and keep building it- in the first place. Thanks for putting the spotlight back on passion.

As Gerber says, there's a difference between the technician and the entrepreneur. Some business owners get so bogged down in the technical work, they forget they are running a business.

So true, neglect is the biggest culprit! Going off in directions that are not related to your site is another. Great article

I must say that working on your own is pretty interesting sometimes cos you organise your own time and you know, when you work hard, you get paid. When you dont, you dont get paid. And when you get paid, they are all yours.

Getting into the air is what I would refer to as passion, but that parachute has an entrepreneurial name to it, it's called cashflow and if that does not remain open at the time it is most critical to the business, it is often a short drop down from there for any business, even ones that should have been otherwise viable.

Oh, it all seems like so much effort that I think it's safer not to have any ambitions at all!

    Ha! Indeed. ;)

I like the idea of having someone help you with the little extra things that you can neglect in your business ventures, but if you have the drive to succeed then you will create the network you need to be successful. I love having a few business partners to help me get excited!

Passion is the key ingredient to success. Love what you are doing and you won't have to work a day of your life

Great article, very well written. I have to second your point about passion; you definitely have to have passion to help keep you and your employees motivated, however, this will not translate into the success of your business. In order for this to happen you must have some substance to add to your style and passion. Making sure that you have a good business model, competent employees and a good client base will definitely help you succeed.

The only way you are going to have any desire at all to go through this insanity is if you’re really passionate about what you are doing..And this is a hidden fact behind every tasks

I think the most common reason for businesses not lasting to long is the fact that people don't think about the hard work ahead when they are getting into it. They just think its easy and fun to own their own business, but when they do get into it they realize it takes hard work and dedication. Which most of them will give up right there. Thanks.

Successful small business owners tend to be smart, hard-working, tenacious, and highly focused. They have to be. According to a Dun & Bradstreet study, businesses with fewer than 20 employees have only a 9% chance of surviving a decade.Even those who are successful in business may fail when it comes to their own finances. Too often these talented entrepreneurs concentrate so intensely on their business that they neglect their personal financial planning.

You are absolutely right. I run websites and i know people who are always complaining they are getting overtaken by other sites. Well stop moaning and do something about it!
